Chayanit Chaweewannakorn

I pursued a Doctoral degree at Tohoku University through Chulalongkorn University and Tohoku University, Japan-MEXT collaboration which provide fully funded scholarship. My field of interest is orofacial pain and temporomandibular systems, which influences my perspective on higher education to focus on research practice. Now I obtained the Doctoral degree and started my academic career as a lecturer, a researcher, and an orofacial pain specialist for 2 years, so I can confidently say that studying at Tohoku University was the most valuable experience in my life. What I achieved is not only the strong research skills, but also a wide connection with other academic fields, and comprehensive life skills.

Tohoku University, Graduate School of Dentistry offers a large network of research collaboration, within Japan and internationally. Thus, you will gain a lot of support, from good research facilities up to the opportunities to communicate your works in the international conferences. During my PhD, I did a multidisciplinary research collaboration with the graduate school of biomedical engineering and the graduate school of medicine on exercise biology. We explored the cellular responses in working skeletal muscle networks, including the masticatory system. For an academic profession, I believe that communication is one of the most important skill other than laboratory skill and critical thinking. I had chance to practice communication regularly in lab meetings, seminars, and public speaking at the scientific conferences. Sharing and talking bring up a supportive environment to overcome any challenges and develop the confidence for my professional career. Apart from study life, I remember myself enjoyed all seasons of Tohoku region. The Sendai city is a perfect combination between modern city and beautiful nature. I spent holidays visiting attractive places and having delicious local dishes. I enjoyed winter sports and hiking in summers and falls.

Internationality is a huge success of Tohoku University. For international students, we have a great support system called ‘a tutor’ to help you adapt and setting up your life in Japan. Additionally, the graduate school of dentistry has a strong international student community (TUIDSO) that held annual activities. These experiences I learned in Japan: team-working, communication skill and scientific knowledge, have prompted me for further research and career. It is my pleasure to welcome and encourage anyone who is looking for a place to pursue higher degree. At Tohoku University, you would develop research skills and mindset for your academic profession, while you could enjoy life in the beautiful scenery of Tohoku region.
