Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry, I am delighted to apprise you of Innovative Research for Biosis-Abiosis Intelligent Interface Symposium (The 6th International Symposium for Interface Oral Health Science), which will be held on January 18-19, 2016 in Sendai, “The Interface Oral Health Science” is the new concept in dentistry, established by Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry at 2002, which is based on the following: the normal oral function is maintained through harmony between three biological and biomechanical systems: “structure of the mouth, including teeth, the mucous membrane, bones, and muscles”, “microorganisms in the mouth (parasites)”, and “biomaterials”. Tooth decay, periodontal disease, temporomandibular disorder, and other oral disorders can be recognized as “interface disorders”, which are caused by the collapse of the interface between the systems. This concept is shared not only by dentistry and dental medicine but also by a variety of disciplines, including medicine, agriculture, material science, engineering, and pharmacology.
Since 2002, Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry has been regarding “Interface Oral Health Science” as the main theme of dental research in the 21st century. We are committed to advancing dental studies by implementing “Interface Oral Health Science”, while promoting interdisciplinary research across a wide range of related fields. Based on this concept, we organized the International Symposiums for Interface Oral Health Science four times, in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2014 successfully, which included inspiring special lectures, symposiums, poster presentations, and other discussions. These presentations were published in English monographs named as “Interface Oral Health Science”, of which the 1st issue was published by Elsevier and the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th issues by Springer. These achievements were praised, and, in 2007, the “Highly-functional Interface Science: Innovation of Biomaterials with Highly-functional Interface to Host and Parasite” based on this project plan was adopted as a Program for Research and Education Funding for Inter-University Research Project 2007-2011, MEXT, Japan; we conducted joint research with the Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University and the Research Institute for Applied Mechanics, Kyushu University. In 2012, “Innovative Research for Biosis-Abiosis Intelligent Interface” based on the former project was adopted as a Program to Enhance University's Research Function Based on Its Specialty 2012-2015, MEXT, Japan; we aimed to create highly-functional and autonomic intelligent interface by combining the highly-functional interface science which was established by Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry and the Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University, with the technology of an evaluation and a control at the interface which was offered from the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering, Tohoku University.
This symposium will have four sessions inviting the distinguished guests from the world, and the poster session for all of colleagues who are interested in the intelligent interface science.
I earnestly desire that this symposium will lead not only dentistry but also a wide range of related disciplines for the next generation, and provide opportunities for significant research.
