Feb. 26, 2024

On February 5 – 16, 2024, the Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry held the 2024 Feb CA+inD Winter Short-term Exchange Program: Multimodal Global Leaders Development through Asian-Model Dentistry Consortium. This program is part of the CAMPUS Asia Plus Program, which is part of the Inter-University Exchange Project established by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT).

The aim of this program is to nurture multimodal global leaders, that is, individuals who are capable of selecting and applying knowledge and skills acquired from a multitude of perspectives. They shall do so in a manner appropriate to the needs of education, research, health care, industry, and government, while also understanding how these different contexts interact.

A total of 43 students from ten universities in five countries/regions participated in this program. From the CA+inD partner universities, this included students from Peking University (5) and Sichuan University (9) in China, Yonsei University (5) and Seoul National University (2) in Korea, Universitas Indonesia (9) and Chulalongkorn University (1) in Thailand. From Tohoku University’s partner universities, students from the University of Hong Kong (1), Universitas Airlangga in Indonesia (5), Fujian Medical University (2) and Sun Yat-Sen University (4) in China participated in the program, making this program more international.

During the two-week program, the students attended lectures and dental workshops by our faculty, in-person hospital tours, and classroom visits. They also participated in cultural experiences and exchanges such as a " Wadaiko (Japanese Drums) Workshop" by KAMO TSUNAMURA DAIKO, a one-day bus trip (to Minamisanrikucho and Izunuma), and a TUIDSO event to deepen relationships with Tohoku University students and local people and to learn about disaster prevention and environmental protection. During the field trip to Minamisanrikucho and Izunuma, the students joined a Kataribe (storytelling) bus and learned from Mr. Goto, a victim of the Great East Japan Earthquake, about the damage caused by the tsunami at the time and the process of reconstruction. In Izunuma, a Ramsar Convention wetland, the students received a lecture from Dr. Shimada, Director of the Research Office, on environmental conservation efforts and observed the ecology of migratory birds such as geese and swans. Thirteen students participated in the homestay program and were able to experience real life in Japan with the support of their host families. Eight Tohoku University student supporters were actively involved in the operation of the program this time. In addition, this year's program was particularly successful in promoting exchange among students from other universities, with students from various universities mixing together and going out together on weekends, which greatly contributed to the building of a network of future dentists.
